Monday 4th February 2008
As you read this week's newsletter I will be in Ireland for the annual Clonmel Coursing Festival, something that I have not had the pleasure of doing before and I am very much looking forward to this meeting with most Irishmen who have connections with greyhounds taking their holidays here just like their horse counterparts do for the pilgrimage to our big Cheltenham fixture. There will also be plenty of us English here and I will report next week in detail on my trip.
A decent week's open race action includes this Tuesday the much awaited Racing Post Juvenile Championship race at Wimbledon live on Sky featuring some potential Derby winners and a must-see clash between puppy sensations Ballymac Under and Farloe Reason. We should have decent chances with Rockburst Mason and Eye Onthe Force in two of the supporting races. On Wednesday at Harlow we will be hoping to get on the competition score sheet when both Eye Onthe Power and Stride On Babe contest the final of the Greene King Trophy worth £2,500 and both enter the final with unbeaten tags to their name.
Our week started off with a trip to Crayford on Monday with a few of our potential Golden Jacket entries warming up for the event in some competitive trial stakes. Rhias Beauty is on song and was unlucky in her race and after a slow start and trouble made up a tremendous amount of ground and was just touched off in a three-way finish by two short heads in 46.94 (-90). In Division B Genesis Sister looks to have taken to the tight circuit very well and after she led on the run up she powered to a 9 length victory in a scintillating 46.11 (-40). Tipp The Breeze ran well in the top division when third to Dubai Adventure beaten 5 lengths in 47.00 (-40) and is sure to improve for the run . Earlier in the night Aero Blackjack won by 1/2 length in a 540m Puppy Open leading all the way from Rough Pebbles in 34.64 (-60).
On Wednesday the semi's of the Greene King Cup at Harlow saw Stride On Babe's unbeaten run at the track stretch to 3 from 3 when she again showed good pace to lead at the first bend and go on to win by 2 3/4 lengths in the fastest of the semi's 37.72 (-15) from Offshore Sox. In the second semi both Genesis Dream and Millwards Summit tangled most of the way round the 592 metres and were both eliminated but better luck in the third semi when Eye Onthe Power ran an excellent race to win by 1/2 length from favourite Sherries Boy in 37.94 (-15). In the heats of the Harlow and Bishops Stortford Herald Newspaper Marathon both Snappy Girl and Geordie Shay qualified for next Wednesday's final when 2nd and 3rd respectively in their heat both only a length and 2 lengths away from winner Transtown Mul in 50.35 (-20).
Thursday's opens at Walthamstow started with another brave run from the game Like Hot Cakes who was involved in a thriller with eventual winner Baran Mustang and Heavy Weather and in a renewed challenge lost out by 3/4 length to Barang Mustang in 40.26 (-30). In division 2 of the Bitches 475m in form Treacle Rose completed a hat-trick with a dazzling display of early pace and although holding on a bit at the end scored by 3/4 length in a good 29.08 (-20). Centaur Decree looked a bit ring rusty but ran a creditable race when 3rd to the flying Mildean Buster beaten just under a length in 29.08 (-20) in the top division of the Arc Trial Stakes. In the last race of the evening Twilight Fantasy, who seems to have promised more than she has delivered lately, won her first Open when taking the Novice Stayers by 2 1/4 lengths in 40.32 (-30).
On Monday's Bags card Matthew Etherington's Seanis Lad won the A4 by 1/2 length in a good 29.02 and Imperial Singer nearly doubled up in the next when beaten a head in an A8 in 29.89.
On Tuesday's card Directors Vision never got any sort of run and was unlucky when beaten by the shortest margin by Kid Joker in 29.34. Ants Gunner also ran a blinder when second by half a length in 29.16 to Reachfar Gifted. It was great to see the talented Missed A Train get on the score sheet after a series of decent efforts in graded and open company and after winning by 1 3/4 lengths in 28.99 he looks like a puppy who could go on to better things. Obafemi ran a fine race when second in the A1 only beaten 1 1/2 lengths in 28.84 to Mystical Haka.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
OPEN RACE:- GENESIS SISTER
GRADED:- MISSED A TRAIN
WHATS ON THIS WEEK
On Monday we have more runners at Crayford preparing for the Ladbrokes Golden Jacket which gets underway next Monday. Butterbridge Ali is trialling before racing and after last week's demolition job Genesis Sister takes on rivals in a very good top Division. As said above we will be at Wimbledon on Tuesday.
Wednesday sees both Stride On Babe and Eye Onthe Power drawn traps three and four in the Greene King Cup Final and also it would be a sweet night if either Geordie Shay or veteran Snappy Girl could win the Marathon Final worth £1,500 to the winner.
There will be plenty of opens on at Walthamstow on Thursday and we will be looking forward to sending some of our pups to Monmore very soon to gain some experience at the track before the valuable Puppy Derby starts.
