Monday 2nd June 2008
Congratulations to Seamus Graham and Loyal Honcho on a sensational Greyhound Derby triumph, one that I think everybody agrees was a well deserved and overdue success for the popular veteran Irish trainer. The whole night was a roaring success with terrific racing supported by a big crowd that had a distinct Irish flavour and it was particularly pleasing to have a winner on the night when Neil Cossins' Scintillas Ruby held on to score a great win in the bitches race.
Directors Chair showed in the heats of the Cesarawitch at Oxford on Thursday that he was back to his very best with a scintillating victory over track record holder Primitive way but 'boy' what a semi he faces! 'Dev' was one of a number of good winners for the kennel this week both opens and graded and, with all the uncertainty around at the moment, it's good to see our dogs are doing the talking on the track although our leading open racer Genesis Dream has come in to season and will miss some big races over the next couple of months.
Final chance this next couple of days for anyone to either sponsor a race or buy tickets for the Goodwood Lounge for the W.G.S.O.A meeting in aid of the retired dogs. I need to know by Tuesday morning and preference for runners on Saturday will go to the owners who are supporting the event. Invites have now been sent out for our owners and guests Kennel Summer Party on Sunday 22nd June and would ask every one to reply a.s.a.p.
A quiet start to the week with Thursday's opens at Walthamstow our first of the week and Eye Onthe Flame again found one too good for him when beaten 3/4 length by Westminsterpearl in the 475m hurdles. Bell Tempest (2nd) and Twilight Fantasy (3rd) had no answers to superstar Flying Winner in the Novice Marathon. On a very slow track Discreet Cat rolled back the years with a facile 7 length win in the 640m Stayers in 40.87 (-120) but Eye Onthe Brave found the strong Farloe Merlin too hot when runner up by 3 1/2 lengths in 29.50 (-60). Centaur Deetee won a weak 640m Novice to open her account by 1/2 length in 41.96 (-100). At Oxford the heats of the William Hill Cesarewitch got underway and Coolanga Flyer, despite well beaten by Lenson Joker (39.60), qualified in 3rd and Directors Chair scored an impressive win in the last heat by 4 3/4 lengths in a fastest of the night 39.43.
On Friday at Romford a well-backed Chilli Cobra failed to catch Harlow Boy by a length in a moderate 36.50 (+20) in Div 2 of theaten 2 1/2 lengths in 35.92 (+20). Roswell Gemini was 2nd to Harlow Lad beaten 2 3/4 lengths in the Puppy 575m with Elusive Tuesday back in 4th after stumbling at the traps. Rockburst Mason was also 2nd in a race with plenty of trouble beaten 1/2 length by Shelbourne Miss in 36.35 (+20) and it seemed our luck was out completely in the race of the night, the 575m Stayers Div 1, when Eye Onthe Force also stumbled on the run up but missing all the trouble he somehow came into the third bend in the lead. With track champion Ronaldos Merit hot in pursuit we looked set for another second but 'Blackie' is as game as they come and not letting his rival pass him he rallied to go on and score by a 1 1/4 in 36.12 (+20) to land a four-timer over track and trip.
All eyes were on the Derby final on Saturday night at Wimbledon but in the Consolation Final both Seanis Lad (4th) and Commander Chief (5th) ran well in defeat as did Aero Blackjack (4th) in the Stayers over 668m after a missed break but Scintillas Ruby was the star for us on the night when she blasted out (3.73 split) in the Bitches only race and then held on gamely from the challenge of Droopys Mate to win by the minimum distance in a good 27.57.
Centaur Gemstone ran a great race leading everywhere but the line in an A4 on the Bags card as did Wilson Pick It (2nd). Our only winner came in the shape of the improving Princess Organa who won well by 3 1/4 lengths in 29.93 (-50).
On Tuesday's graded card Thankyou Les Kid obliged at the second time of asking with a 6 3/4 length success in 29.63 and this daughter of Brett Lee looks one to follow over the next few weeks. Treacle Pearl made it 2 from 2 starts with a good win by 5 3/4 lengths in 29.15 (+10). Directors Vision was again second and Bell Tornado made it a kennel 1-2 when defeating Stride On Babe by 2 lengths in 28.93 (+10).
Kinda Flashy was the first of five winners for the kennel on Saturday night's card shrugging off Cunning Darby to score by 2 1/2 lengths in 29.23. Seanis Doire looks a nice recent purchase for John Noakes when using her scorching early pace to set up a 3 length win in 29.03. Mountjoy Gold ran well to lead at the third bend and hold off Snoozys Palace by a length in 29.08. Eye Onthe Spirit trapped well when a warm favourite in the S1 and never looked in danger on the way to a 1 1/2 length win in 39.88 with Centaur Cappo back in third. Treacle Rose was in good form as she raced to a 2 3/4 length victory in top grade in a career best 28.74.

WHATS ON THIS WEEK
Eye Onthe Veto is at Crayford on Monday in a trial stake warming up for next week's Vase. Tuesday sees the semi-finals of the William Hill Cesarawitch and Directors Chair and Coolanga Flyer will look to make next week's Sky final. The Graphite (UK) Puppy Derby begins on Thursday and with the likes of Fear Zafonic in action it will be a tough ask of our pups to win but Eye Onthe Brave will head our team. We should have runners at Romford Friday and Saturday is the retired dogs benefit meeting at Walthamstow which will be a celebration of what has been achieved over the years.
