It was a shock to the system returning tonight from the Algarve sunshine to a wet and windy England and it still surprises me on how much can happen in a week from our kennel and you will have to forgive me on just a brief note looking back on the week.
The week got underway with another impressive win for the talented Eye Onthe Storm in the heats of the Betfred Eclipse at Nottingham in a fine 29.75 but Eye Eye Pickle got no sort of run in his heat and was, along with Dalcash Scolari, eliminated. I found a bar called Figo's in Vilamoura where we could watch the Sky action from Doncaster on Tuesday and in the feature race the £9,000 to the winner Yorkshire St Leger and Kinda Easy for a few seconds looked like he was going to repeat last month's Wimbledon success as he led from the boxes but he never really handled the track right from the beginning of the event and eventually finished 5th while high hopes from our Droopys Zach of winning were also quashed when he met serious trouble around the first two bends and at one point was at least 10 lengths off the pace. To his credit he made up an incredible amount of ground to finish 4th to Capel Smiley brilliantly trained by our friends the Gifkins family. On the same night we had two winners at Hall Green with Kinda Handy landing a sprint and the evergreen Kindred Sparky winning a veteran race in a fine 28.33.
Risky Invader continued his fine form with another open win at Harlow on Wednesday and on a busy Friday Romford took centre stage with the heats of the Essex Vase. It didn't start well as Treacle Express was badly bumped at the first bend injuring a shoulder in the process but better news in heat 3 where the under rated Goldies Destiny produced an excellent fastest of the night 35.36 win and it was pleasing to see Eye Onthe Tempo return to the winner's podium with a 35.72 heat win. At Coventry a double courtesy of Aero Bolt (very impressive) in a puppy race in a fine 29.35 and a back to form Goldcrest Lord in 16.85 were the highlights while on Saturday we had two graded winners Sligo Too (26.44) and Rainham Giles (26.51) at Harlow. The main action on Saturday was the semi-finals of the Betfred Eclipse at Nottingham where again Eye Onthe Storm was impressive when winning by nearly 3 lengths in 29.99 though his reward of getting trap 5 in Thursday's live on Sky final is far from ideal.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
WHAT'S O NEXT WEEK
Opens at Hall Green Tuesday and Harlow Wednesday while the main action is the semi-finals of the Essex Vase at Romford where both Goldies Destiny and Eye Onthe Tempo have good chances of making next week's final.
Eye Onthe Storm faces the stiffest test of his career to date when he runs from a difficult trap 5 slot in the Betfred Eclipse Final on Thursday at Nottingham and the current 2010 Derby favourite will need to be at his brilliant best to beat a strong field. We will also be at Romford and Coventry on Friday.
WEBSITE RECOMMENDED BETS
Droopys Zach was desperately unlucky in the Yorkshire St Leger final but did manage to grab 4th for the ante-post e.w to cover bets. At Nottingham Eye Onthe Storm recommended at 8/1 would surely be trading at a lot shorter price if he wasn't drawn in trap 5. I've not had a proper chance to find a betting opportunity this week so we will concentrate on cheering on Eye Onthe Storm.
