Monday 21st January 2008

Aaaaarh!! short head defeats last week were not on the agenda! Directors Chair ran his heart out in the Prestige final at Hall Green on Tuesday but just couldn't hold off the challenge of Tuftys Pearletta. It was one of those weeks as a stack of winners from our kennel were overshadowed by a couple of big race defeats which would have given a great start to the year and it seems like January is not our lucky month!

At Nottingham on Monday Rockburst Mason was the best of our three puppies in the Futurity Trial Stakes when he ran well to be second to Calzaghe Ted though well beaten by 7 lengths in a fast 29.88 (+30).

Sky night on Tuesday at Hall Green was spoiled by torrential rain all night but it started well in the 645m when the progressive Like Hot Cakes battled hard to lead at the 5th bend and hold on gamely in the end to win by 1/2 length in 41.34 (-120). Genesis Alix followed up in the 670m in a thrilling finish passing long time leader and odds on shot Droopys Nelson to score a great win in 42.64 (-120) by 1 length. Snappy Girl got stuck in the mud and was well beaten in the Marathon and then the feature race of the night the Bet Direct Prestige final was looking in the bag for favourite Directors Chair when he led up and went 4 lengths clear but the writing was on the wall coming off the last bend as he began to tire and the 'chasing' Tuftys Pearletta caught him close home to win by a short head in 40.98 (-120).

At Harlow on Wednesday the 750m was won in good fashion by Geordie Shay by over 6 lengths in 50.88 (-30) and Millwards Summit will be better for the look at the track after finishing 3rd in the 592m standard. Eye Onthe Power was made favourite in the Monkey Final over 592m but a tardy start cost him as main rival Killough Nell pinged and he was always chasing a lost cause eventually beaten 6 lengths in 38.00 (-20).

The Coronation Cup at Romford has not been a good event for favourites and on Friday our Genesis Dream had that dreaded tag put on her and typically a messed up break, where she flew out but turned right straight in to trap 2 Venturemore, stopped her gaining an all important lead and when she arrived at the first bend to find dogs around her she couldn't get back into the race and finished a well beaten 3rd. We were all disappointed but this fine bitch out of former kennel favourite Kinda Sleepy is sure to go on to better things in her future career!

A good card at the Walthamstow on Saturday with the heats of the Pepsi Max Marathon the highlight and in heat 1 Spiridon Louis showed his class to score comfortably in a flying 52.61 with both Lode Star and Bell Tempest 4th and 5th respectively not totally disgraced. The second heat saw a terrific battle between Centaur Iris and Romford Car Three before the latter got the better of Iris by 2 lengths in 53.08. Heat 3 was made up of three from our kennel and in a messy race with 2 dogs being ko'd at the 5th bend we managed to conjure up the 1-2-3 when Centaur Fugi outstayed Genesis Alix to win by 1 3/4 in 53.38 with Snappy Girl an unlucky 3rd a further 1/2 length away.

Lady Asher (s hd) and Cassius Clay (1/2) were both just touched off on the Bags on Monday but Treacle Rose won an A3 in only her second race back from season in 29.24 by 2 1/2 lengths and Seanis Wish also scored again in A4 company by 3/4 length in 29.16.

Only a few runners on Tuesday and no winners but both Imperial Singer and Lockdale Duke ran well to finish runners up in their races. Thursday was a lot different with Blues Wish getting the ball rolling with an overdue debut success in a good 29.23 finishing very strong and one to note over a further trip in the future. Seanis Lad also scored a debut win when beating kennel mate Lindys Belle in a good 29.17 by 1 length and another good win by Largo Lassie in the A3 in 29.07 could see this bitch win opens over a longer trip. Vigorous Whitney ran well in second place in her first run back from season in a tough A2 and Fear Mykeo is still as good as ever when trouncing A1 dogs again in 29.08 (-10) and another veteran Eye Onthe Jewel took advantage of a downgrade to win the last race an S2 by the minimal distance in 40.45 (-15) to complete a cracking night from the kennel. In between the opens on Saturday a few graded races saw Blackey Said So win her 6th race when she blasted out of trap 4 and held on to win in 28.99 and to round off a good night Centaur Cappo ran very well when beating Twilight Fantasy (unlucky in running) by 2 1/4 lengths in 40.25 in the S1.

A few triallers will be put through their paces at Crayford on Monday night with the Golden Jacket in mind including Genesis Sister, Tipp The Breeze and Rhias Beauty. Wednesday sees the start of the Greene King Cup at Harlow over 592m which we won last year with Questhouse Sash and this year will see about four entries including Genesis Dream, Eye Onthe Power, Stride On Babe and Millwards Summit. Perry Barr's Birmingham Cup is the Sky meeting on Thursday and we might put some runners on in the supporting races and Saturday is an all Open night at the Stow featuring the final of the Pepsi Max Marathon in which we have three chances of beating hotpot Spiridon Louis in the shape of Genesis Alix, Centaur Fuji and Centaur Iris.
