We are now only 10 days away from the all important 2015 GTA Trainers Championship meeting at Sittingbourne sponsored by Chelsea Glass and our team is almost decided and I have to say is looking very strong at the moment. The first thing I decided was to put a team together that's most suited to the distances and to the galloping track even if that meant leaving some of our current and 2014 stars out of the side, it's not a reflection on them but we must take advantage of an excellent chance of landing the spoils. Since our winning team at Doncaster in 2010 we haven't really come close in the subsequent meetings at Perry Bar, Wimbledon, Yarmouth and last year at Sheffield so it's time we put the record straight.
Looking at the eight races I don't see any weaknesses in our squad if all goes well this week, our team will all run or trial at Sittingbourne on Thursday. The sprint is a tough one and though Cloudbursting is still very inexperienced for a sprinter with only five races to his name he could well turn into a serious contender for all the major two bend races this year. He trialled well last week over track and trip with a 15.47 effort and should improve this week. The two 480m Standards will be competitive for sure and Blue Moment, who has had a terrific start to the year winning five times at Towcester, looks ideal. He possesses super early pace and is difficult to pass once in front. Blonde Nipper, our well touted Derby hope, has started his career at Imperial Kennels in great style with a couple of comfortable victories at Towcester and he moved well in a trial last week beating Vanrooney 1/2 length in a decent 29.08 and he will join Blue Moment in the 480m. The Bitches only 480m brings a nice problem as we have three or four top notch performers to chose from. Evanta Evita had a superb 2014 finishing with a 5th place in the Oaks final behind Casheen Maureen at Belle Vue. Her seasonal debut last week in the Ladbrokes Festival at Monmore went well with a fine 3rd place in the Bitches 480m and she should strip fitter for the runs, she will trial over 480m on Thursday. Domino Storm would grace any team and has also had a fine start to the year and it seems crazy she is only a reserve for us but I feel Evanta Evita will be more suited to the track. The only member of our team that ran at Sheffield last year to represent us this year will be Adageo Bob who ran a stormer then when just failing to get up on the line. He loves Sittingbourne having won both over 500m and 642m and is just coming back from a rest since being runner up in the Coronation Cup so this race over 500m will suit him perfectly. The puppy race over 500m has been earmarked for the talented Swift Whirwind who has won his last four races at Towcester including a victory over Racing Post juvenile winner Ballymac Brogan and he looked in good nick when trialling in 29.35 last week. That leaves the two staying races - the first over 642m has that short run to the corner but the classy Billys Bullet has coped well this year in these types of races having won the Prestige at Hall Green then broken the clock at Towcester over 655m and last Friday just failed to get up over 630m at Monmore in the Ladbrokes Spring Festival Stayers Final when just pipped a head by Five Star Clipper. In the 708m race Vanrooney will be a real force and we will be looking for maximum points from him, he is another that oozes class and despite nearly reaching veteran status he will take some stopping! All in all a powerful team I do believe, like I say it seems a shame we have to leave some stars out like Domino Storm, Blackstone Marco, Black Francis, Blonde Razor, Aayamzamodel (just coming out of season), Evanta Fantasy, Aayamzaone, Jimmy Nailed On, Calco Flyer, Vanfrenchie, Ilewinn Allot and Aero Babooshka to name but a few and looking at them our reserve team from these would not be far away from winning!
This Wednesday the traditional Trainers Championship luncheon takes place on a luxury boat cruising down the River Thames which should be fun. The teams will be announced and the draws for the races will take place. Thanks have to go to the GTA's Chairman Rick Holloway who has organised an event to remember and special thanks to Len Ponder whose Chelsea Glass Company has kindly sponsored the Championship.
Last Friday won't go down as one of our best days as What A Laugh crashed out of the Coral Golden Sprint at Romford leaving us empty handed in next week's final. Earlier in the day both Evanta Evita (3rd) and Aero Babooshka (4th) ran well in the Ladbrokes Spring Festival Bitches final at Monmore behind former kennel Star Casheen Maureen while in the Category 2 Ladbrokes Spring Festival Stayers final worth £5,000 to the winner Billys Bullet came from 8 lengths off the pace to just fail by a head to catch the classy Fivestar Clipper.
A busy day at Monmore on Monday for the Ladbrokes Spring Festival where the going certainly did the railers no favours. Little Domino Storm struggled when 4th in her Bitches 480m heat but Evanta Evita, having her first run in 2015, finished 2nd in her heat with sister Aero Babooshka a fast finishing 3rd. In the Stayers contest Blonde Razor was struggling in the going and in a hot heat Blackstone Marco ran well but was eliminated but Billys Bullet scrambled home in 2nd to make the final.
At Sheffield on Tuesday Black Francis crashed out of the Queen Mother Memorial Cup and in supporting races both our sprinters Kilmagner Mike and Vanayamzaman where 2nd while Calco Flyer produced a tremendous run in beating some useful rivals over 500m in a good 28.88.
At Romford on Friday no luck for What A Laugh in the Golden Sprint semi finals and a couple of notable defeats but two fine winners in Evanta De Leon (48.06) stepping up to 750m and another superb effort from Jimmy Nailed On who won well in 35.27.
Just a few opens at Towcester on Saturday night with the progressive Parkers Poison taking advantage of trouble in behind when breaking well to go on and score by 10 lengths in to make four wins on the bounce for this lovely fawn bitch.
We started well on Friday with puppies Alice My Angel (28.71) and Swift Gust (28.69) both winning well. Dehavillands Boy ran well again on Friday when 2nd in an 8 dog B5. Two other pups Persian Black and Carden Punch making her debut also ran well when 2nd.
On a busy Saturday with a decent crowd Roswell De Niro opened the evening with a fine win by 4 3/4 lengths in 28.46. Poodle Star is a bit inconsistent but grabbed his chance well in a B4 holding on to score by a head in 28.64. In another 8 dog race a B5 Forest Vanessa in her second ever race for the kennel fell out the traps but showed electric pace to lead off the second bend and go on and score well by 3 1/2 lengths in 29.63. Toosey Fern ran well when 2nd in a very competitive A1 that would grace any open and Benkaat Nero was also 2nd in a hot A3.
Some hard luck stories from a couple of our 8 runners and very good run from Saffrons Champ when 2nd in an A3. The best was saved for last when Lord Hesketh's pup Rufford Atom ran a stormer to come through the field to get up on the line and score by a head in 28.88.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
WHAT'S ON NEXT WEEK
A quiet week for the kennel as we build up to the Trainers Championship. We are trialling most of our team on Thursday and they should be spot on for the following week.
We will as usual be busy Friday/Saturday/Sunday at Towcester and also on Sunday we will be at Henlow for the start of their mini Derby over 428m.
WEBSITE RECOMMENDED BETS
A quiet couple of weeks for our followers but expect some big action in the Trainers Championship meeting next week.
Looking at the Henlow competition next Sunday I'm wondering after a couple of costly defeats if Evanta Fantasy might be a reasonable price ante post also Aero Babooshka is a course specialist and has to be included in our calculations.
EVANTA FANTASY - 2.5 pts e.w ante post - Henlow Mini Derby - starts Sunday
AERO BABOOSHKA - 2 pts e.w ante post - Henlow Mini Derby - starts Sunday
