Black Farren may have been last in the RPGTV Scottish Derby on Saturday but I actually thought he didn't disgrace himself and was really only beaten about 5 lengths by the excellent winner The Other Reg. A slight bump from the middle running Lightfoot King in trap 1 stopped his initial run to the bend and then he was bumped out of contention at the first bend by the same dog. He plugged on gamely and I'm sure he's going the right way. It was a tremendous night at Shawfield with a large crowd and congratulations to Pat Rosney for a brilliant training performance with The Other Reg who looks a serious contender for the English Derby.
It's a great time of the year for open racing with the Derby on the horizon and plenty of competitions underway or just about to start. On Tuesday at Sheffield Cotton Pants was a big price but broke well and finished a good 3rd to qualify in the Bresmed Northern Sprint semi finals. We had an excellent evening at Central Park on Friday as all three of our Grand National entries qualifying for next Friday's semi final. Swift Dartmoor and Ninja Storm were second and third respectively but not behind the hot ante post favourite Lenson Wilson who was surprisingly eliminated. Parkers Dynamite is now showing us he could be a great hurdler and was fluent on the way to victory against the all conquering Razldazl Radio in what was easily the fastest of the heats a fine 29.32 calc while in a supporting race Rubys Rascal showed what good heart he is in with a 6 length plus success in a very good 38.82.
The Regency and the re-arranged Lawrence Jones Festival at Monmore start next week but before that we have a small matter of a Trainers Championship meeting at Towcester on Saturday which should be cracking night's racing. We hand our teams in tomorrow and I must admit even at this late stage I haven't 100% decided which ones to use though I would like to involve as many owners as possible and on the night I have hired an executive box where all owners and friends whether they have a dog running or not are invited up to share a drink with us at least. We will lay some soup and sandwiches on and hopefully it will be a pleasant warm evening. As well as the 8 championship races there will be around 4 or 5 Derby Trial Stakes to add spice to what will be a great evening's entertainment.
We are still looking for some players for the forthcoming charity football match on May 9th at Aldershot football ground. Contact me here or on 07721778297 if anybody is interested in playing for my team. It should be a fun night and we will raise a few bob for the retired greyhounds.
Cotton Pants made the big sprint final at Sheffield and a good night at Central Park on Friday with our hurdlers headed by Parkers Dynamite. Black Farrren's long journey to Shawfield was in vain but a good effort to make the Scottish Derby Final.
Over at Towcester on Saturday some good Derby trial stakes saw a defeat for Bruisers Bullet at the hands of Droopys Verve who flew round in a brilliant 28.77. Bombers Bullet's strong running tactics payed dividends as he caught Bit View Knight to win by 1/2 length in 29.21.
On Friday Potman scored his first victory when taking an A6 by a length in 28.79. In a very good and rare A1 Ninja Fortune turned it into a procession when scoring by over 6 lengths in a fine 27.94.
On Saturday morning plenty of seconds with Roben Katie, Gully Foyle, Towstar Billy and Garryglass Bambi with Ribble Ghost taking her chance well in an A7 scoring by 1 1/4 lengths in 28.91.
In the evening plenty of open race action and in the grades Shlowdown Sally surprisingly got caught on the run in when second in a good D1 with Tread Lightly 3rd. Kiltrea Mike just got up on the line to score by the minimum margin in 42.13 in an S1. In the Track Championship final Boylesports Duke left his run a touch too late when second beaten 1 1/2 lengths in 28.40 with Rubys Razzle finding trouble in 5th. A very good debut for youngster All Slick Now taking an A5 by beating kennel mate Brinkleys Rosie by 3 1/2 lengths in a good 28.55.
On Sunday we had a couple of winners from our six runners with Tiffield Lad storming to a 1 1/2 length victory in an A5 in 28.58 while Goldsmith Slick followed up last week's victory with another win in an A4 in 28.76.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
OPEN RACING - PARKERS DYNAMITE
WHAT'S ON NEXT WEEK
A tremendous and busy week starting with the Bresmed Northern Sprint Final tonight where Cotton Pants takes his chance.
On Thursday we prepare a few runners for the Coral Regency at Hove while on Friday we have important Grand National semi finals at Central Park for our three hurdlers.
Towcester will be the centre attraction on Saturday with the Gain Trainers Championship meeting with 8 races building up to what will hopefully be a dramatic climax as it is most years! The card will be spiced up with some top class Derby trial stakes so definitely the place to be Saturday.
WEBSITE RECOMMENDED BETS
Black Farren just missed out on our each way recommendation but Parkers Dynamite will be a lot shorter than his 25/1 after taking his Grand National heat in fine style.
One bet this week and that's for 'Team Wallis' to win the Trainers Championship meeting at Towcester on Saturday though the odds might be a bit skinny.
